May 1, 2024

What is the lottery and what it raises funds for?

The Federated Health Charities lottery is part of Federated Health Charities’ annual fundraising campaign which brings provincial employees in the Ontario Public Service, the OPP and participating government agencies together to raise funds for 21 health charities serving all Ontarians.

Funds raised by the lottery goes to health education and awareness, research for better treatments and cures, and providing critical client and patient support in communities across the province.

Ticket sales are only open to provincial employees in the Ontario Public Service, the OPP, and participating government agencies. Therefore

sales are not open to members of the general public. If you would like to donate to Federated Health Charities as a member of the general public, please visit our donations page at Canada Helps.

Why is this year so crucial?

After the last 4 years of strain, exacerbated by the pandemic and rising energy, housing and food costs, many charities have not recovered, in part because the people they serve have not recovered. According to CanadaHelps research, 57% of charities report that they can’t keep up with the demand for services and the number of Canadians who donate continues to decline.

The Fraser Institute also reported that in 2001, more than one in four tax-filers (25.2 per cent) donated to charities. By 2021, the latest year of comparable data, that number plummeted to 17.7 per cent.

Canadians are also donating a smaller share of their income than they did in previous years. As a collective unit, Canadians contributed 0.55 per cent of their household income to registered charities in 2021—down from 0.58 per cent in 2001 and a steep drop from the peak of 0.72 per cent in 2006.
