As Canada marks Mental Health Awareness Week from May 5–11, 2025, the theme “Unmasking Mental Health” encourages Canadians to break the silence and stigma surrounding mental illness. This national initiative, led by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), highlights the importance of open dialogue and community support.
At the heart of this movement are Federated Health Charities’ Lived Experience Speakers—individuals who bravely share their personal journeys with mental health challenges; individuals whose stories foster empathy, reduce stigma, and inspire others to seek help and healing.

“When I mention that I have Chron’s and Ulcerative Colitis (yup, both), some people don’t know anything about what that means; others think of the digestive issues that are more commonly known. Few people consider the gut-brain connection that means these illnesses also come with a significantly increased likelihood of mental illness. Depression and anxiety can develop as a result of the symptoms but can also cause the existing symptoms to worsen (AKA flare). It’s a never-ending cycle that makes mental health awareness and coping strategies integral to managing my disease.” says Jana Osbourne, one of the speakers at the May 14, 2025, Federated Health Charities Lunch & Learn Event.

The Institute for Advancements in Mental Health (IAM) is a leader in this space and one of the 21-health agencies supported by Federated Health Charities. Their work drives innovation and advocacy for people living with complex mental illnesses, and empowers individuals and families through education, support, and community-based solutions that prioritize dignity and inclusion.
IAM is one of the 21 health charities supported by Federated Health, a collective that strengthens workplace giving campaigns across Ontario. Federated Health amplifies the impact of organizations like IAM by providing essential funding for research, outreach, and support services that improve lives across the province.
