I recently had the pleasure of meeting Barb Davis, Volunteer Programs Manager for the OLG (Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation) and learning about their historic successes for Federated Health Campaigns. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Barb, a driving force behind major fundraising campaigns at OLG.
Connecting and Building Relationships
Barb’s work revolves around connecting, relating, and building relationships with people. She is adept at forming volunteer teams and engaging individuals, all through the virtual realm of her computer screen. This ability to connect is rooted in her background in not-for-profit fundraising and her inherent service heart.

A Journey of Dedication
Hired in 2012 as Media Relations Manager just as the Federated Health Campaign was underway, Barb quickly took notice, joined in, and found her OLG niche in volunteering and fundraising. The following year, Barb took on larger responsibilities, running the Federated Health Campaign (FHC) for the Toronto office and the next year for the entire organization. Her passion and dedication led to the creation of her current role as Volunteer Programs Manager, overseeing the United Way campaign in the fall as well.
Adapting to Change
With 1,450 employees across six sites in Ontario, OLG’s fundraising campaigns have evolved significantly, especially during COVID-19. What was once a site-by-site effort transformed into a unified, corporate-wide campaign. This shift required innovative approaches, including virtual events and online auctions, which have proven successful and continue to raise substantial funds for FHC.

Strategic Planning and Execution
March is a crucial month for Barb, as she organizes her volunteer team and prepares for the OLG campaign launch on May 1st. With 35 volunteers from across the province, she meticulously plans and executes the campaign, ensuring transparency and engagement. Her focus is on raising funds through payroll donations and utilizing tiered giving incentives to encourage participation.
For example, for a payroll donation or a credit card pledge during the first week of the campaign valued at $50 or more, or for $10, $20 or $50 per pay donations, individuals have a chance to win a corresponding prize – always practical prizes that people can use. The ‘early giving’ incentive is hugely popular, always well supported, and generously kicks off our fundraising every year!
Impactful Fundraising
The introduction of on-line lottery ticket sales for Federated Health Charities during Covid was a game-changer! OLG now has a dedicated portal on the FHC website exclusively for our own donations and purchases of lottery tickets. The transition to a cashless campaign allows for more sustainable and effective fundraising methods and has further enhanced our campaign’s reach and success.

A Joyful Mission
For Barb, the joy of her work lies in shining a light on the contributions of others. She strives to make people feel valued and connected, fostering a sense of worth and engagement. Volunteering at work, supported by OLG, is a big part of the wonderful culture and employee engagement, and provides opportunities for individuals to contribute to the greater good. Something that we’re collectively proud of and feel good about.
A Vision for the Future
Barb’s work is not just about raising funds; it’s about creating a sense of community and purpose. By offering opportunities for service during the workday, she enhances the personal value and satisfaction of employees, making a significant impact on both the organization and the broader community.
