Every year on November 14, we come together for World Diabetes Day, a powerful initiative established by the United Nations to shine a light on diabetes. This date honors the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin in 1922, and whose groundbreaking work has transformed millions of lives. With over 537 million people living with diabetes globally—many undiagnosed—this day is a call to action.
Here in Ontario, Diabetes Canada is at the forefront, offering essential support to those affected by diabetes every day. Last year alone, their specialists provided critical assistance to over 23,000 Canadians through their helpline, delivering much-needed guidance and resources.
Additionally, more than 20,000 children attended D-Camps, where they indulged their sense of fun and adventure in a diabetes-friendly environment filled with activities, friendships, and education on diabetes management, guided by on-site medical professionals. As one camper, Oria, expressed, “I personally have been affected by donations that have been given to Diabetes Canada. At D-camps, I was provided with a loving community and role models when I felt isolated and small.”
Diabetes Canada was one of the first charities to join Federated Health Charities when it was founded in 1983.
