How is this reflected among the different charities in terms of donations?
ALS Society of Canada
ALS Canada receives no core funding from any level of government to support their work. The generosity and commitment of thousands of donors, fundraisers, corporate donors and foundations who provide vital financial support makes their work possible.
- 1,240 people living with ALS in Ontario supported by ALS Canada’s Community Leads
- 2,309 pieces of equipment provided– free of charge – to people living with ALS in Ontario who are registered with ALS Canada
- 192 support virtual groups that come together to share experiences and learn from each other
- 1,536 support group attendees, an increase of 58.5%
- Investment of nearly $2 million in research funding with 16 research grants awarded in 2023
- Participation in meetings with government to help raise the voices of people living with ALS
Alzheimer’s Society of Canada
Every gift they receive stays in local communities; there are 26 Alzheimer societies throughout Ontario and each of the 26 provides specialized programs for local populations. One of the newest programs is “Taking Control of Our Lives” — an 8-week group education outreach focused on empowering and supporting people living with dementia and reducing the stigma associated with the condition.
Arthritis Society Canada
Arthritis Society Canada provides not only accessible virtual programs, but also a variety of in-person services, including their camp program for kids with arthritis. The Society was able to invest a remarkable $6.2M in research in 2023, compared to $3.6M in 2021, an inspiring 80% growth. They also reached 3.2M Canadians with trusted information in more than 3,045 communities.
- $50 allows 2 people to attend a webinar hosted by an arthritis expert to learn tips about disease management.
- $78/year ($3/paycheck) allows 1 parent, caregiver or guardian of a child with arthritis the chance to connect virtually with others in a similar situation.
- $130/year ($5/paycheck) connects 5 people with arthritis to a peer listener for direct, 1:1 emotional support.
- $260/year ($10/paycheck) provides 1 newly diagnosed child with an ergonomic backpack filled with useful resources.
- $1,000 helps send one child with arthritis to summer camp.
Autism Ontario (AO)
The work they do helps all autistic individuals and families. They provide access to meaningful supports, information, and connections so, for their whole life, people with autism are equitably and seamlessly supported to reach their full potential and participate fully in their communities. To do this, AO provides a range of services including:
- Community events, social/recreational programs and workshops
- CommunityConnect portal, Career Connection portal and webinars
- Adult programs
- Caregiver support groups
- French language services
- Advocacy resources
- March Break and summer support funding
- For every $25 donation, Autism Ontario provides access for one person to an affordable, supportive and inclusive Social Learning Program
- For as little as $3 a paycheque ($78 a year), one family can attend a social learning opportunity.
- $130.00 or $5.00 per paycheque, pays for a caregiver to attend the CARES program that provides stress-relieving tools and support.
