April 2 is/was World Autism Day, a day we recognize the importance of reaching out and helping people with neurodiverse conditions. Autism Ontario has a new theme representing their World Autism Day events and activities: Celebrate the Spectrum.
Autism Ontario is a charitable organization with a history of 50 years representing the thousands of people on the autism spectrum and their families across Ontario. Made up of knowledgeable parents, professionals, and autistic self-advocates who can speak to the key issues that impact autistic individuals and their families, Autism Ontario is the province’s leading source of information and referral on autism, and one of the largest collective voices representing the autism community. There are seven regions across the province of Ontario.

Collaboration: We believe in the power of working side by side with individuals, families, and communities to make informed choices about autism.
Accountability: We hold ourselves and others responsible for achieving successful outcomes through high standards of integrity and fiscal responsibility.
Respect: We value equity, diversity, and inclusion, and we listen to understand.
Evidence-Informed: We use and create knowledge to guide our decisions and work.
The Impact of a Dollar:
For every $25 you donate, Autism Ontario can provide 1 individual attending a Social Learning Program that gives an opportunity to attend a supportive and inclusive community event at an affordable rate.
For as little as $3 a pay ($78 a year), you can help 1 family attend a Social Learning Opportunity.
For $130.00 or $5.00 per pay, would pay for 1 caregiver to attend the CARES program series that provides stress-relieving tools and supplies.

An Autism Story
Sally’s Story
When my daughter was diagnosed with autism, I was scared! I worried about if I had the ability as her mom to have the strength to help her while dealing with my own health issues. I cried a lot because I didn’t know where to start. I did a lot of searching online and I came across Autism Ontario. I found they had an online virtual meet-up with other moms. My first meeting, I was very shy and nervous because of being judged so I listened as other mothers spoke, and the group facilitator spoke about what Autism Ontario has to offer with events and supports. At the end of my first virtual meet up I felt not alone and understood and from then I haven’t missed a virtual meet up unless an emergency occurred. You never feel alone and always feel heard.
