Charity Spotlight Canadian Liver Foundation

Apr 25, 2023

This year’s Federated Health Charities campaign runs from April 3, 2023, to June 30, 2023. During the campaign, we will be highlighting each of our 21 charities and how they work to improve the health and well-being of people across our province.

Our fifth charity in the spotlight is the Canadian Liver Foundation. The Canadian Liver Foundation was founded in 1969 by a committed group of business leaders and doctors who believed that liver disease needed a champion. There are over a hundred different diseases that affect the liver. The most common are non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, hepatitis A, B and C, and liver cancer. Today, nearly 1-in-4 people across Canada are affected by liver disease.

The Canadian Liver Foundation invests in crucial, life-saving research into liver disease. Every new development in the field of live research has the potential to exponentially improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of liver disease, improving the lives and health of millions of Canadians living with and at risk of liver disease. Through their patient support, education and advocacy programs, the Canadian Liver Foundation is working to the quality of life of those living with liver disease by working with federal, provincial and municipal governments, community organizations, healthcare providers and individuals to raise awareness of liver-related health issues and to push for policy changes that will result in better screening, access to treatment, and patient care.

Bringing research to life

Federated Health Charities has supported the work of the Canadian Liver Foundation since 1991. The money raised through the Federated Health Charities campaign has helped to ensure that the Canadian Liver Foundation can continue provide the critical support programs that are necessary for Canadians and Ontarians living with liver disease.

“The Federated Health Charities’ campaigns are different because they’ve provided the Canadian Liver Foundation with ongoing support, unrestricted revenue that allow us to build and develop programs that support Ontarians and Canadians alike, who are living with liver disease,” said Jennifer Nebesky, President and Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Liver Foundation. ” We could not do this without Federated Health Charities and we are so grateful for that.”

Mental health awareness in Ontario is crucial as wait times for services stretch up to 2.5 years. Federated Health Charities supports innovative mental health initiatives, including youth suicide prevention and schizophrenia care. By funding organizations like the Institute for Advancements in Mental Health (IAM), we aim to create lasting change and support for those affected by mental illness across Ontario.
