Jennifer Stewart first joined Federated Health Charities in 2021 as a member of the OPS Advisory Council, as she felt a deeply personal connection to the work of the many health charities they support, in particular the Canadian Cancer Society, after facing her first breast cancer diagnosis in 2016-2017. Facing a health crisis like this is a life altering event and has shaped her own journey and her commitment to the cause.
Now, nearly five years later, Jennifer has returned to work after a second diagnosis and treatment and has fully assumed the role of Board Chair. Her story is one of resilience, purpose, and a deep belief in the power of collective impact.
“It’s important for me to be involved beyond the fundraising and donations I make to Federated Health,” Jennifer shared. “I try to share my story — not just to raise awareness, but to show how these charities truly help people like me.”

A Board Built on Purpose
Under Jennifer’s leadership, the Federated Health Board has evolved into a dynamic team with a diverse talent profile – bringing together expertise in finance, policy, human resources, equity and inclusion, and more. The Board now includes members from the Ontario Public Service, the broader public sector, the private sector, and the not-for-profit world, all working together to advance the organization’s mission.
“We’ve made real progress this past year,” Jennifer explained. “We’ve developed key governance policies – like a Financial Delegation of Authority, Code of Conduct, Gift Acceptance, and Procurement – through our Governance sub-committee. These are foundational pieces that help us operate with transparency and accountability.”
The Board is also exploring new ways to build on its engagement with the 21 member charities, including formalizing touchpoints with charity executives to strengthen collaboration and impact.

Beyond Fundraising: Real-Life Impact
Jennifer’s personal experience with breast cancer has made her a passionate advocate for the Canadian Cancer Society, one of Federated Health’s member charities. She speaks candidly about how the organization supported her — not just emotionally, but practically.
“People think it’s just a website, but it’s actually the first place I went to understand my diagnosis, treatment options, and even how to find a wig,” she said. “There’s information about support groups and how donations are used. That transparency matters.”
She often uses the Society’s statistics in her talks, helping others understand the real-world value of donations. For example, a $1,000 donation can fund an MRI – a critical tool in tracking the effectiveness of cancer treatment.
“When you’re going through chemo, you need to know if the tumour is shrinking. That MRI is everything. And it costs money. That’s why I donate – because I know exactly how my money helps.”

A Personal Mission
Jennifer’s passion for Federated Health is deeply personal. She chooses to direct her donations specifically to the Canadian Cancer Society, knowing that the funds will support research and services that could one day save her life — and the lives of others.
“Everybody has a family member whose health has been affected by something. Making that personal link is what compels people to give. I think about where my money is going, and I know it’s going to help me — and others — in the future.”
Jennifer’s story is a powerful reminder that Federated Health Charities is more than a fundraising campaign. It’s a community of people who care deeply, act boldly, and work together to improve health outcomes across Ontario.
Whether you’re donating, volunteering, or joining a committee, there are many ways to get involved — and every contribution helps build a healthier future for all.
