Olay Bridgewater
Ministry of Education
I’ve been part of the Federated Health Charities family for more than 14 years, and it remains one of the most meaningful parts of my journey in the Ontario Public Service. My involvement started early in my career, thanks to a Director who recognized how much I enjoyed volunteering and being part of a meaningful cause.
Since then, I’ve worked in three different Ministries in the OPS, including the Ministry of Community and Children Services, Ontario Shared Services and the Ministry of Education. No matter where my career has taken me, my commitment to Federated Health has stayed constant. So, joining the Federated Health Advisory Council in 2025 just seemed like a really great fit for me. I remember saying to myself, “Yes, that sounds like something I’d love to volunteer for. It’s such a great cause.”
Finding Joy in Creativity
Over the years, I’ve become the lead person for the campaign in my branch, but it’s always been a team effort. What I gravitate toward most is communications – everything from writing a message, sending out updates, designing materials, or helping craft the look and feel of campaign content.
“I enjoy making things visually appealing and getting information out there. I love creating a buzz around the campaign – motivating people and keeping them engaged.”
For me, it’s fun. It’s energizing. It gives me something unique to look forward to each campaign season.
“I like to treat it like a project on the side. It adds variety to my day and lets me focus on creative work, which I really enjoy.”

Building Connections Across the OPS
One of the best parts of my involvement has been the people I’ve met along the way. Federated Health brings together employees from different divisions, branches, and ministries who all share a commitment to supporting important health charities across Ontario.
“I’ve had the chance to meet colleagues from all over the OPS. It’s inspiring to see how enthusiastic people are about Federated Health and how willing they are to participate and contribute.”
That sense of shared purpose is something I value deeply.
A Voice at the Advisory Table
Serving on the Advisory Council has also been a rewarding part of my experience. It’s a place where creativity meets strategy – where ideas turn into actions that can influence the campaign’s direction.
“The great thing about communications is that it’s a creative space. Being part of the Advisory Council takes that creativity to another level. I get to help inform policy, shape the campaign, and make recommendations based on what I’ve learned over the years.”
Knowing that my perspective contributes to something larger gives me a strong sense of pride.

Why I Keep Coming Back
My answer is simple.
“It just feels good to do something for Federated Health because I believe it’s important to help those who are in need. You don’t do it for a paycheque – you do it because it means something. And I think that’s what keeps so many volunteers coming back.”
For me, supporting Federated Health Charities has never felt like an obligation.
“It’s the right thing to do.”
