October is Women’s History Month: Osteoporosis Canada Celebrates Dr. Angela Cheung’s Award Winning Research

How Osteoporosis Affects Women: Signs, Support, and Research Advances in Bone Health

Scientists continue to make significant advancements in osteoporosis treatment.

Meet Dr. Angela Cheung, a Professor of Medicine at University of Toronto, Senior Physician Scientist at University Health Network (UHN), the founder of its Osteoporosis Program, and a member of Osteoporosis Canada’s Scientific Advisory Council.

Recently Dr. Cheung, was awarded the prestigious 2024 Gideon A. Rodan Excellence in Mentorship Award for the outstanding support she provides as a senior scientist making significant contributions and promoting excellence in bone and mineral research.

Her work, alongside Osteoporosis Canada, is essential in raising awareness about osteoporosis as a disease rather than a natural part of aging. Tracie Napoli, Director of Fund Development at Osteoporosis Canada, emphasizes the importance of understanding this condition: “You can’t see it happening. You can’t feel it. And something as simple as a sneeze can shatter your bones.”

Napoli wants everyone to understand one thing: “Osteoporosis is a disease”. Whether you’ve been diagnosed or are at risk, Osteoporosis Canada is your trusted source for information, resources and support.

Fueled by a passion to cultivate and mentor the next generation of researchers the work of Dr. Cheung and Osteoporosis Canada is more important than ever. Since its partnership with Federated Health Charities in 1992, Osteoporosis Canada has been a vital resource for education, support, and research funding.
