November is Crohn’s and Colitis Month: Celebrating 50 Years

Nov 4, 2024

Happy 50th anniversary Crohn’s and Colitis Canada!

In 1974 a small group of parents formed to raise awareness and the need to research Crohn’s disease and Colitis. To commemorate its 50-year milestone, the original founders came together recently to recall the first meeting where, as Marilyn Finkelstein recalls, “…one gentleman at the back of my rec-room put his hand up to volunteer’. Others followed suit and by the end of the evening an initial group of about 20 people became the first board. Watch this 3-minute video to meet these individuals.

In 1988, Crohn’s and Colitis Canada was welcomed into Federated Health Charities (FHC). Since then, awareness, research and funding donations have made it the largest non-governmental funder of inflammatory bowel disease research in Canada and the second largest worldwide!

“The partnership with Federated Health Charities is really important. It’s helped our organization get more well known. The donations help support local and national programs focused on kids, adults, education, awareness, research as well as advocacy. The funding is critical for us.” says Angie Specic, Vice President of Marketing and Communications.  “Federated Health Charities funding provides things like camps, scholarships, education and support, and things we do around awareness and building content.”

Today, the investment in research has led to the development of new treatments and lower rates of surgery for people with Crohn’s disease and colitis. Despite these advances, the incidence of Crohn’s in Canadian kids under 10 has doubled since 1995, and 1 in 140 Canadians lives with Crohn’s or colitis. Home – Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. Donations play a crucial role in these efforts helping to improve awareness and treatment options for those affected by these diseases. To support this important cause, consider donating to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada today…it’s one of the 21 charities your donations support.
