At Federated Health Charities , we know that healthy choices don’t mean sacrificing joy or flavour—especially during the holidays! This Thanksgiving, we’re giving the traditional charcuterie board a wholesome makeover by filling it with vibrant, disease-fighting ingredients that nourish the body and delight the senses. We’ve gathered some of our favourite recipes from our charity partners—and from our own kitchens—that are perfect for your board or as tasty, health-conscious sides. Enjoy!

1. Load Up on Fruits & Veggies
Start with a rainbow of berries, apples, grapes, tomatoes, carrots, celery, cucumbers, and broccoli. These colourful picks are packed with antioxidants and nutrients that help protect against cancer. https://www.heartandstroke.ca/healthy-living/recipes/appetizers/baked-herb-pita-crisps-with-roasted-carrot-dip

2. Add Healthy Fats
Swap out creamy cheese dips for guacamole, hummus, and Greek yogurt-based sauces. These healthy fats add flavour and keep your guests feeling satisfied. https://liver.ca/recipe/you-make-my-heart-skip-a-beet-hummus/

3. Go Nuts (and Seeds!)
Almonds, pistachios, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds bring crunch, fibre, and heart-healthy fats to your board. They’re a simple way to boost nutrition and taste. https://www.heartandstroke.ca/healthy-living/recipes/appetizers/crispy-chickpeas-and-pumpkin-seeds-with-lime

4. Choose Whole Grains
Whole wheat pitas and crackers are a smart, fibre-rich alternative to refined options—and they pair perfectly with dips and toppings. Choose whole-grain options and check nutrition labels to make certain they have low sodium and sugar content. Select those with high fiber to promote fullness and support digestion.

5. A Touch of Indulgence
Yes, you can include a little dark chocolate! In moderation, it’s a sweet treat with antioxidant benefits. We recommend these easy, sweet, Dark Chocolate Mini Apples Bites: Use a melon baller to scoop small balls out of an unpeeled apple. Then, stick tall toothpicks into each apple ball, and dip into melted dark chocolate and sprinkle with walnuts. Place on a parchment-lined plate and pop into the fridge until the chocolate hardens. Yum!!!

6. Skip the Processed Meats
Instead of cured meats, try protein-rich alternatives like fish or legumes. They’re just as satisfying and much better for long-term health. https://www.heartandstroke.ca/healthy-living/recipes/appetizers/mini-crab-cakes-with-smarter-tartar
