Before the costumes go on and the candy hunt begins, it’s smart to get some protein-packed fuel into those little bellies (and yours too!). Your friends at Federated Health Charities recommend 3 of our favourite Halloween-themed, fast & easy, dinner ideas – they’re light, festive, and fun to make with your kids—and they feature wholesome ingredients like whole grain bread, nut butter, and hard-boiled eggs.

1. “Bloody Fingers” Nut Butter Sandwiches
Just 3 ingredients:
Whole grain bread
Nut butter (peanut, almond, or sunflower)
Strawberry jam (sugar free if you have it)
Instructions:
Use a rolling pin and your muscles to smush down your bread so that it’s completely flat – one slice at a time. Spread a thin layer of your favourite nut butter over the slice. Start with any side, roll the bread tightly into a log (the peanut butter will keep the log stuck together so it won’t unroll). Cut off the bread crust at the top and bottom of each ‘log’. Using your finger, press down on one end of the log at the top to make an indent the shape of a fingernail. Dip the other end of the log into the jam so it’s drippy and looks like blood oozing out of a broken finger. Lay onto your plate or a platter, and then with a small spoon add more jam into the indent you created for the nail. See the photo for the full effect. Enjoy!
Protein boost: Nut butter provides healthy fats and protein to keep energy levels up.

2. “Creepy Spider Egg Poppers”
Just 2 ingredients:
Hard-boiled eggs
Black or Green olives
Instructions:
Slice hard-boiled eggs in half as shown in picture. Cut olive in half and place cut side down on the egg yolk to form the spider body. Using the other half of the olive, slide thin strips to make the spider legs. Arrange the spider legs on either side of the spider body. Creepy but yum!
Protein boost: Eggs are a great source of complete protein and nutrients for growing bodies. For extra flavor, spread a little cream cheese or hummus underneath the olive.

3. “Witchy Fingers” Cream Cheese Sandwich Snacks
Ingredients:
Whole grain bread
Cream cheese
Olives, green or black
Instructions:
Take two slices of whole grain bread. Spread cream cheese evenly on one slice, then place the second slice on top to make a sandwich. Cut the sandwich into 5 thin strips—these will be your spooky “fingers.” Trim off the top crust of each strip. Then, gently press your thumb into the top of each strip to create a small indent where the fingernail will go. Slice a black olive in half. Place one half, cut side down, into the indent at the top of each sandwich strip to look like a creepy fingernail. Your Witchy Fingers are ready to haunt your snack table! S
Protein boost: Whole grain bread and cream cheese make this a satisfying pre-candy sandwich supper.
Trick-or-Treat Tip:
Getting a little protein before heading out helps balance blood sugar and keeps everyone feeling full longer—so there’s less temptation to dive into the candy bucket early!
